Description
In 2017, there were more than 47,000 deaths as a result of suicide in the United States (NIMH, 2018). Additionally, there were over 67,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2018 (NIDA, 2019). Individuals with a substance use disorder are particularly at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. This presentation will explore the link between substance use and suicide. The importance of increasing a client’s protective factors while decreasing risk factors will be highlighted. Tips for effectively addressing a client’s co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders will be reviewed throughout the training along with an emphasis on crisis safety planning for at risk clients.
Learning Objectives
- The participants will be able to identify common risk factors and warning signs for suicidality with their clients.
- The participants will increase their skills related to identifying protective factors for clients.
- The participants will be able to complete a crisis safety plan with a client to address their substance use and co-occurring mental health disorder.

Presenter
Geoff Wilson, LCSW, LCADC, is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor. He has been practicing in the mental health and substance use disorder treatment fields in Kentucky for over 25 years. Wilson is currently in full time private practice with Lexington Counseling & Psychiatry in Lexington, KY. In 2004, he received the Robert Straus Award for Outstanding Service in the Field of Substance Abuse Treatment in Kentucky. In 2008, Wilson was appointed to the Kentucky Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors, serving for 10 years. In 2013, he was selected by NASW-KY as the Social Worker of the Year. Wilson is currently the President of the Kentucky Association of Addiction Professionals.
