H.R. 375 Needs Tribal Support!
A bill to provide for a clean fix to the 2009 Supreme Court decision Carcieri v. Salazar is headed to the floor of the House of Representatives following a bipartisan vote in the House Natural Resources Committee on May 1, 2019.
In that decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Secretary of the Interior could take land into trust only for those Tribes under federal jurisdiction in 1934, the year Congress enacted the Indian Reorganization Act. This means that some Tribes are able to restore their traditional homelands and some are not.
H.R. 375 would correct this harmful ruling by reaffirming all lands currently held in trust and by restoring the ability of all federally recognized Tribes to restore their homelands through the land-into-trust process.
H.R. 375 is sponsored by Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) and cosponsored by 27 members of both parties.
